Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) for Children at "All About Special Child"

At “All About Special Child”, we understand that children face unique emotional and behavioural challenges. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is a highly effective, evidence-based approach we use to help children understand the powerful connection between their thoughts, feelings, and actions

What is CBT and How Does it Help?

CBT is a practical, goal-oriented talking therapy. It doesn’t just focus on past experiences; instead, it equips children with actionable tools to manage their present-day challenges . The core principle is that our thoughts influence our feelings, which in turn drive our behaviours. By identifying and changing negative or distorted thought patterns, a child can experience more positive emotions and develop healthier behaviours .

For example, a child who thinks, “I’m no good at maths,” may feel anxious and give up on their homework. Through CBT, we help them challenge this thought and replace it with a more realistic one, like “Maths is hard, but I can get better with practice,” which leads to a more positive and resilient approach

How We Deliver CBT at Our Clinic

At “All About Special Child,” we adapt CBT to suit each child’s developmental stage and specific needs . For younger children, we may use play therapy, incorporating arts, puppets, or role-playing to help them express their feelings in a comfortable and engaging way . For older children and adolescents, we use more direct cognitive restructuring techniques to help them identify and challenge unhelpful beliefs, and modelling to demonstrate and practice new, positive behaviours

A key part of our approach is involving parents and caregivers. Research shows that parent involvement significantly improves therapy outcomes . We work collaboratively with families, offering support and training so they can reinforce the skills their child is learning at home and in daily life

Who Can Benefit from CBT?

Our clinic uses CBT to support children with a wide range of issues, including anxiety, depression, behavioural difficulties, ADHD, and autism spectrum disorder . CBT is also effective for children who have experienced trauma, using specialised techniques like Trauma-Focused CBT to help them process their experiences safely .

Therapy is typically short-term, lasting between 8 to 20 sessions, with the goal of giving your child life-long coping skills . At “All About Special Child,” we are dedicated to helping your child build resilience, confidence, and the emotional tools they need to thrive.
